Industrial Transformers
Industrial Transformers include: furnace transformers and rectifier (or in general converter) transformers.
Furnace Transformers are used in metallurgical industry to sustain the electrical arc needed to generate the necessary heat to melt the scrap metal (steel or ferroalloy). For this reason, they are characterised by very high secondary current (hundreds of kA) compared to a “conventional” grid transformer.
Converter Transformer, instead, are used to supply power electronic converters and find principally application in VSD (Variable Speed Drives) and Aluminium electrolysis. Power electronics cause distortion of the load current waveform leading in higher losses and increasing of temperature inside the transformer.
